On May 5, Ukraine will celebrate one of the biggest church holidays – the Resurrection of Christ, so on April 29, students of the Lysychansk Pedagogical College joined the informational and educational hour “Traditions and Customs of Easter”. (teacher Yu.V. Zhaldkova)
For Ukrainians, Easter has always been one of the most important religious holidays of the year. Bright Resurrection of Christ is considered one of the most important Christian holidays. The date of Easter changes every year. However, traditions and prohibitions remain unchanged.
Over many millennia, traditions, rituals and beliefs were formed in Ukraine, which were passed down from generation to generation. In many parts of our country, Easter traditions and rituals are observed almost unchanged, as they have come down to us since ancient times.
From September 1, 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to the New Julian church calendar. It is almost completely identical to the Gregorian, which is used by Catholics. Now Orthodox believers will celebrate almost all church holidays at the same time as Catholics. However, Orthodox Christians will still celebrate Easter and related holidays separately from Catholics. This is due to the fact that Catholics and Orthodox calculate the date of Easter differently. For calculations, Orthodox believers accept March 21 according to the Julian calendar as the date of the vernal equinox, which corresponds to April 3 according to the Gregorian calendar, so the Orthodox Easter cannot come earlier than April 4.
On the eve of the holiday, we would like to wish you all the best. Let there be warmth and peace in the soul, a peaceful sky above the head, and close relatives and friends. Let this holiday bring understanding, harmony and joy!
