International Chornobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

On April 26. 2024, the International Chornobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is held.

On the eve of the day of the Chernobyl tragedy, the students and teachers of the Educational and Research Institute of Natural and Agrarian Sciences joined the commemorative film screening “Chernobyl Dust Falling for Years”, held at the Children’s and Youth Library of the Myrhorod City Council.

The Chernobyl disaster is an ecological and social disaster caused by the explosion and subsequent destruction of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on the night of April 26, 1986, located on the territory of Ukraine. The destruction was explosive in nature, the reactor was completely destroyed and the environment was contaminated with a large amount of radioactive substances. In September 2003, at the CIS summit, the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, suggested that the member states of the Commonwealth declare April 26 as the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Radiation Accidents and Disasters. The Council of Heads of State of the CIS supported this proposal.

Already 38 years have passed since the reactor at the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl NPP exploded. On this day, we honor the liquidators for their courage and bravery. The participants of the meeting watched a video about the city of Pripiat, learned about the chronology of events at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and about the liquidation of the accident. The event was supplemented by a viewing of a video of the evacuation after the tragedy at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. An excerpt from Kateryna Motrych’s story “Flight of cranes over unthreshed grass” was read. Those present observed a moment of silence for those who gave their lives during the liquidation of the Chernobyl disaster.

We convey the most sincere words of gratitude to the liquidators and bow before the earth for a high civic position and bow our heads to the bright memory of those who died.
