On April 23, 2024, the online event “The Influence of Reading on the Human Brain” was held at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University dedicated to the  World Book and Copyright Day.

The organizers of the meeting were the Educational and Research Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology and the Lubny City Library for Adults named after Volodymyr Leontovych. Teachers, students and a librarian Svitlana Vasylivna Petryk, a psychologist of the “Nadia” center Karina Shevelinda, a head of the “Vmart” group of the support institution “Zasulskyi Lyceum of the Lubny City Council of the Lubny District of the Poltava Region” Jesus Chornii took part in the conversation. 89 people were interested in the event.

The deputy director for social and humanitarian work of the ER IPP addressed the participants with an opening speech, who noted that reading books stimulates a person’s mental activity, improves memory, increases creative potential, helps fight stress and bad mood.

Svitlana Petryk presented information that reading is one of the most difficult tasks for the brain and activates 17 of its areas at once, reduces the risk of diseases, develops critical and analytical thinking skills, improves concentration and attention, etc.

Psychologist of the center Karina Shevelinda talked about reading as the most effective way to overcome stress and relax, she emphasized that this type of speech activity is one of the most effective non-pharmacological methods of treating depression.

Jesus Chornii shared his thoughts on reading books in the Harry Potter series of novels by JK Rowling. He reminded the audience that stories about the most famous boy wizard have a positive effect on the human psyche. Books about Harry also do not lose their popularity and relevance among audiences of different ages. Together with the acquirers, he mentioned interesting magical stories about the “magical” world, in which, in addition to “ordinary people” and wizards, there are also giants, elves, werewolves, goblins, poltergeists and other fantastic creatures.

At the end of the meeting, teachers and students watched a social video about the popularization of reading books – printed and electronic.

The attendees sincerely thanked the organizers for the useful, informative meeting, which took place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
