A Course of Guest Lectures for Applicants of the Romance & Germanic Philology Department: European Experience.

In April, as part of a unique international cooperation between the Department of Romance & Germanic Philology and the Department of English and American Studies (Faculty of Art, Matej Bel University, Banska Bystrica), the students had the honor of learning from Ms. Jana Javorčíková, PhD, a distinguished expert in the field. She delivered an engaging set of English and American literature lectures, tailored specifically for first (Bachelor’s) and second (Master’s) degree students.

At the first lecture, which took place on April 3rd, Ms. Javorčíková explored the theme of “Angry Young Men, Social Novel, and Postcolonial Literature. Psychoanalysis and Women Writers in English Literature.” Students had the opportunity to delve into the works of renowned authors such as Leslie Paul, John Braine, John Wain, Hanif Kureishi, Muriel Spark, Ian McEwan, and others. The lecturer analyzed the impact of social changes in the 1950s on English literature, highlighting the characteristics of literary movements and works, focusing on themes of rebellion, alienation, and identity search.

On April 17th, Ms. Javorčíková introduced the audience to the history of higher education institutions, classifications of universities, and the features of the education system through the ages, which were important aspects for understanding the genre of the campus novel. Ms. Javorčíková discussed the image of the student in literary works and the peculiarities of student life in different periods of history. Ms. Javorčíková also introduced the audience to the works of Charles Dickens, Thomas Hughes, Evelyn Waugh, and other representatives of this genre.

Ms. Javorčíková’s lectures sparked keen interest and enthusiasm among the students. Her deep knowledge, ability to tell and analyze texts engagingly, and openness to discussions made these classes informative and emotionally charged.

The students and teachers of the Romance and Germanic Philology Department express their gratitude to Ms. Jana Javorčíková for her mastery and captivating pedagogical approach.
