A Course of Guest Lectures for Applicants of the Romance and Germanic Philology Department: European Experience
As part of a unique international cooperation between the Department of Romance & Germanic Philology and the Department of English and American Studies (Faculty of Art, Matej Bel University, Banska Bystrica), in March-April, the students had the privilege of learning from a renowned expert in the field, lecturer Petra Jesenská, Ph.D. She delivered a fascinating series of lectures on English lexicology, tailored specifically for first (Bachelor’s) and second (Master’s) degree students.
At the first lecture, which took place on 20 March, Ms. Petra discussed Synonymy. The students deepened their knowledge of different ways of expressing similar or almost identical meanings of words in English. Ms. Petra gave the participants valuable tools for analyzing and understanding synonyms, contributing to their mastery of the language.
At the lecture, which took place on 27 March, the students learned the concept of antonyms, which express the opposite meaning, and hyperonyms, which form semantic fields. The lecturer offered exciting examples and exercises that helped students expand their vocabulary and understanding of semantic relations in English.
On 3 April, Ms. Petra introduced students to the lexical morphology of English and talked about morphemes as the basic building blocks of English words. They learned about the processes of word formation and important morphological concepts. The lecturer provided students with valuable tools for understanding word structure that will help them further language learning and lexical skills development.
Ms. Petra Yesenska’s lectures on English lexicology were informative, engaging, and highly practical. They equip students with valuable knowledge and skills necessary not only to understand the lexical aspects of the English language but also to apply them effectively in their language-learning journey.
The students and teachers of the Romance and Germanic Philology Department are grateful to Petra Yesenska for her expertise and fascinating approach to teaching.
