The International Scientific and Practical Conference “Language and Literature in Multicultural Discourse (in Memory of Professor Oleksandr Halych)” was held at the Educational and Research Institute of Philology & Journalism of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University on April 5, 2024.
More than 200 participants from 24 universities in Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, and China attended. This year’s scientific event was dedicated to the memory of an outstanding professor and well-known literary critic, Oleksandr Halych. The Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature (Headed by Olha Kryzhanovska) and the Department of Romance & Germanic Philology (Headed by Nailia Khairulina) organized the conference.
The conference was opened by the University’s rector, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Olena Karaman. The Director of the Institute of Philology and Journalism, Doctor of Philology, Professor Viktoriia Dmytrenko; Head of the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature, Doctor of Philology, Professor Olha Kryzhanovska; Head of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology, Candidate of Philology Nailia Khairulina addressed the participants and guests with welcoming remarks. The organizers wished the participants creative inspiration, fruitful discussions, and inspiration.
The conference opened with a plenary session, during which a minute of silence was observed in memory of Professor Oleksandr Halych, a doctor of philology who, from 1998 to 2015, headed the departments of Ukrainian Literature, Literary Theory, and Comparative Studies at our University.
During the plenary session, the reports of Professor Valentyna Halych and Professor Artem Halych entitled: “Scientific, Literature and Pedagogical Activities of Oleksandr Halych in The Multicultural Dimension,” Nataliia Filonenko “Memories of the Teacher: a Biographical Sketch of Oleksandr Halych,” Olena Kravchenko “A Word About the Teacher (In Memory of Oleksandr Halych),” Svitlana Nehodiaieva “Literatural Discovery of Oleksandr Halych” The poetry of Oleksandr Halych was performed by the 4th year student Valente Kostiantyn. The parallels between the genius of Oleksandr Halych and William Shakespeare were drawn by Tetiana Molderf, a second-year (master’s) degree student.
At the end of the plenary session, the scientific community was offered a creative project in memory of Professor Oleksandr Halych, created by his son, Professor Artem Halych.
The conference was not just a gathering of academics but a warm and friendly community. It fostered sincere conversations, pleasant memories, and a shared passion for language and literature in multicultural discourse.
