Guest lecture

A guest lecture “Peculiarities of the Technologies of Growing Medicinal Plants in the Conditions of Ukraine” was held at the ER INAS.

Students and teachers of all specialties of the Institute of Natural and Agrarian Sciences attended a guest lecture by Nazar PRIVEDENIUK, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, head of the medicinal plant cultivation technology department of the Research Station of Medicinal Plants of the Institute of Agroecology and Nature Management of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine.

During the meeting, the listeners learned about the peculiarities of technological processes in the cultivation of medicinal plant raw materials – flowers and inflorescences; herbs and leaves; roots and rhizomes; fruits and seeds. Technological processes differ significantly depending on which medicinal raw materials are planned to be obtained.

The first steps that Mr. Nazar recommended for beginners in the cultivation of medicinal plants are crop selection, field selection and soil preparation (primary and pre-sowing). The participants of the meeting learned about the entire technological cycle of growing medicinal plants – from the planting of production crops to the sale of products to the final consumer. Each cultural species of medicinal plants has its own characteristics not only of growing, but also of drying raw materials, which includes a number of technical conditions with the use of specialized equipment, which allow to preserve valuable biological substances of raw materials. Also, a mandatory element, and often not easy in the conditions of Ukraine, is quality control of plant raw materials.

The listeners were particularly interested in the question of the use of pesticides in the cultivation of medicinal plants and the possibility of controlling their residues in finished raw materials. In addition, even the conditions of transportation of finished raw materials for their further use by pharmaceutical companies, which, as a rule, are customers of such raw materials, are of great importance. One of these companies, Lubnyfarm, is located in the territory of the Poltava region.

We are sincerely grateful to Mr. Nazar and our partners – the Research Station of Medicinal Plants of the Institute of Agroecology and Nature Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for a meaningful and interesting lecture, a useful professional meeting, and we hope for further cooperation!
