Ukrainian Strongman Championship

On March 23-24, Zaporizhzhia traditionally hosted the Ukrainian Strongman Championship.

More than thirty athletes from all over Ukraine competed in the following weight categories: 80 kg, 90 kg, 105 kg, 120 kg and over 120 kg.

The competition consisted of three exercises. The first exercise is Zeher’s lifting – the athlete lifts the barbell from the platform to his knees, puts it on his knees, then takes it on his forearms and stands up. The exercise is scored when the athlete straightens his knees and stands straight.

The second exercise is lifting a log above the head. The athlete first rolls the log on his chest, and then lifts it up. At the same time, he must fix the position and align his knees and elbows.
The triathlon ends with a classic deadlift without equipment.

The champions were:
Valerii HAZAIEV (weight category up to 105 kg.)
Dmytro IHOLKIN (weight category 120 kg)

Silver awards:
Roman HREKOV (weight category +120)
Volodymyr SAVOSTIANOV (weight category up to 120 kg)

Oleksandr DUBOVOI in the weight category up to 120 kg won a bronze award and became the winner in the “master” category.
The competition became a qualifier for the national team of Ukraine. Our athletes made it to the main team and won the right to represent Ukraine and their native Luhansk region at international competitions in 2024.

Oleksandr DUBOVOI, the Chairman of the Federation of Power Sports of Luhansk Region, director of the Educational and Research Institute of Health Care and Sports, pays significant attention to the development of this kind of sports: “This year, we will adopt legal norms that enable our sport, namely strength athletics and tug-of-war should already be in Ukraine in the system of children’s and youth sports schools. This is the task that our leadership of the Federation sets before us, and we will deal with it. The first steps have already been taken and I believe that strength athletics will soon be opened throughout the country.”

According to the definition of the Federation of the Strongest Athletes of Ukraine and Tug of War, Oleksandr Dubovoi became the best coach of the competition and received the Memorial Cup (for the training of high-class athletes Volodymyr Savostianov and Dmytro Iholkin).

We congratulate the athletes and coaches, we wish them a successful start, to represent Luhansk Region and their native Kreminna at international competitions.
