Guest Lecture for Philology Students

An intriguing guest lecture on the topic “The Specifics of Translating Scientific Texts” took place at the Department of Oriental Philology and Translation.
The lecture was prepared by Svitlana Anatoliyivna Matviyeva, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Professor of the Department of Applied Linguistics, Comparative Linguistics, and Translation at the M. Dragomanov Ukrainian State University. This event, organized for students pursuing higher education in the programs “Translation (English and a second foreign language (Chinese))”, “Language and Literature (Chinese, English))”, and “Language and Literature (Japanese, English))”, as well as for the teachers, aimed to deepen the understanding of the peculiarities of translating an important category of texts – scientific. During her presentation, Professor Svitlana Matvieieva unveiled key aspects of translating scientific texts, emphasizing the necessity for accuracy, clarity, and contextual relevance.
Drawing from her extensive experience in translating scientific works, she shed light on the complexities and challenges that translators face in this field. She underscored the importance of understanding the terminology and concepts in the field, as well as the ability to convey scientific content while considering the language and cultural specifics. The lecture garnered significant interest among the audience, who actively participated in discussions and posed questions to the expert. The event served as a valuable step in enhancing the professional competence of both students and faculty members in the field of translating scientific texts. Following the lecture, it was decided to continue organizing similar events to promote active exchange of experience and knowledge in the field of translating scientific literature.
