The university library held a meeting with a local historian Serhii Shevtsov.
On February 19, the library of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University held a meeting with a local historian Serhii Shevtsov on the topic “History and Present of the Lubny Diocesan Women’s School”, which was dedicated to the 103rd anniversary of the university.
The students were introduced to the history of the construction of the diocesan school, which is a decoration of the city of Lubny. The students learned from the local historian that in 1902, the 12th diocesan congress of the clergy decided to open a diocesan school in the city of Lubny, and it was opened in 1907. The school was opened mainly for the free education of the daughters of the Orthodox clergy. But for a fee, representatives of other strata of the population also studied there. The training course was close to the course of a female gymnasium. But perhaps the most important task of this school was the training of educated priests’ wives. The following were taught: the Law of God, the Russian language, mathematics, geography, general and Russian history, pedagogy, calligraphy, church singing, needlework and home economics, music (they taught how to play the piano and the violin).
The project of the building itself was created by the famous architect, academician of architecture Oleksii Beketov at the expense of the candle factory of the diocese.
To train subject teachers of the seven-year comprehensive school, which was the most popular at the time, teachers’ institutes were created with a shortened period of study (2.5-3 years), which provided unfinished higher education. And in 1920, the Lubny Teachers’ Institute was opened, where teachers of physics, mathematics and other natural sciences were trained.
From 1932 to 1941, the Lubny State Pedagogical Institute was located in the building.
During the fascist occupation, a concentration camp for Red Army prisoners of war was placed in the building, 19,500 of them were shot in Lubny. In 1985, their memory was immortalized by the installation of a memorial sign near the prominent building.
The students learned such interesting facts from the local historian Serhii Shevtsov, to whom everyone was very grateful for the historical excursion.
Currently, Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, relocated from the war zone, with its leadership and part of its structural units, as well as the Vasyl Barka Gymnasium of the Lubny City Council, are located here. Also, students of the Lubny Medical School study in this room, rehearsals of the city’s art groups and classes of the station’s young technicians and naturalists groups are held.
The majestic building has long been waiting for its renovation, because with its monumentality, originality of architectural forms, it gives the city a special sophistication, nobility, makes its overall portrait truly unique.
