Methodological Seminar at the ER IPJ
16.2.2024
On 14 – 16 February 2024, the Educational and Research Institute of Philology & Journalism held methodological seminars.
The seminars were dedicated to introducing students of the first, second, and third levels of higher education to the universal decimal classification and modern requirements for the list of references in scientific research.
The events were organized by the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature and the Department of Romance & Germanic Philology. Olena Anatoliivna Borshchova, Director of the Library of Kreminna Lyceum No. 5, was invited to speak at the methodological seminars.
A bibliography is an essential component of any scientific research or work. It is a list of sources the author uses to prepare the material. It allows readers to verify the accuracy and sources of information and expand their knowledge on the topic. A bibliography is drawn up according to specific standards, using elements such as the author’s name, source titles, publication date, publisher, and other data.
Olena Borshchova shared her experience and presented a small “bibliography cheat sheet” to help students and researchers correctly format articles, term papers, and master’s theses. The speaker noted that bibliographic literacy demonstrates the experience of a researcher.
The participants learned that there are basic rules for citing sources, the sequence of their arrangement, and the elements of a bibliographic description of a document.
The correct bibliography has several advantages: it builds trust and credibility, prevents plagiarism, makes it easy to track sources, and standardizes scientific achievements.
The universal decimal classification is necessary for integration into the international multilingual classification system of intellectual achievements. It has been used in more than 100 countries since 1876. The speaker shared life hacks for indexing information sources using UDC.
The seminar participants took part in the discussion, shared their thoughts, and had the opportunity to ask questions and receive comprehensive answers.
We are sincerely grateful to Olena Borshchova for her helpful assistance to the Educational and Research Institute of Philology & Journalism students.
