On November 9, as part of the activities of the Center for Design and Applied Arts “Creative Space”, a master class “Traditional Ukrainian wall painting” was held by the teachers of the Design Department of the ER ICA together with the NGO “Common Cause of Poltava Region”. The event is timed to the World Day of Culture Workers and Masters of Folk Art. Nazar Bozhynskyi, associate professor of the Design Department, spoke about the peculiarities of traditional Ukrainian wall painting, demonstrated the varieties of ornaments and its main differences from the well-known Petrykivskyi.
Paintings were made by non-professional artists on white chalk walls throughout Ukraine, and they were renewed with new ones every year. The so-called “tree of life” or “pot” is the main ornamental motif image of both towels, carvings, wedding chests, Easter eggs, and wall paintings. It is a representation of world creation, birth, growth, is a sacred motif in Ukrainian culture. It incorporates many signs and symbols, starting from geometric (cross, circle), plant, and ending with animalistic (bird, horse).
The master class was attended by students who actively attend such events organized for them by the NGO “Common Cause of Poltava Region”.
What are the techniques of painting, and how to practically join this art was demonstrated on the example of painting on chalkboards (imitation of a whitewashed wall) with dyes of natural origin and water-soluble analogues – watercolor paints.
