Halloween celebration at FFL
1.11.2023
The Faculty of Foreign Languages celebrated Halloween.
Every year, on October 31, the modern holiday Halloween is traditionally celebrated. The birthplace of the holiday is Ireland. However, today, this holiday is celebrated throughout Europe, as well as in many places around the world and Ukraine is no exception. Therefore, the Faculty of Foreign Languages joined the celebration of All Saints Day this year.
The first mention of Halloween dates back to the 16th century, since its prototype – the pagan holiday of Samhain, which was associated with death, otherworldly and supernatural, was celebrated by the Celts. In the XIX-XX centuries, the holiday gradually dies out, it is replaced by a more modern holiday – Halloween.
According to legend, on the night before Halloween, spirits living in the other world return to earth, which is why the holiday, or rather, its eve is called All Saints Day. And the legend recalls the cunning sinner Jack, who was not accepted into hell or paradise and he wandered on earth with hellfire in his hands. In order for the flame not to go out, Jack used a pumpkin as a lantern, which later became a symbol of the holiday.
This year, the student self-government of the faculty organized a competition for talented, active and original “Horrors within the walls of the FFL,” where students of the faculty took part. The participants were faced with the task of creating unique patterns on a pumpkin, or presentingyour terrible images and costumes, to transform into something mystical.
The winners were chosen by a picky jury, and the victory was given to the participants in the successor nominations:
