Honoring the memory
Students and teachers of the University honored the memory of the deceased defenders of Ukraine.
September 5, 2014, 43 soldiers of the battalion “Aidar” were killed near the city of Luhansk. This tragic event became a painful memory for many Ukrainians, a difficult stage in the formation of national unity.
Teachers and students of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University are constantly taking part in meetings and cleaning of the burial place of the dead soldiers, as well as honoring the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of their state.
Today, representatives of local authorities, school youth, volunteers and activists gathered at a solemn meeting dedicated to the tragic event of 2014.
At the beginning of the event, the head of the Starobilsk Regional State Administration A.I. Garkavyi addressed all those present and focused on the role of the military men in protecting the territorial integrity of the country and called to honor the memory of those killed by a minute of silence.
The Candidate of History M.М. Chumak stressed the historical significance of today’s events, pointing to a strong link between the military actions of 2014 and the “Red Terror”. In January 1918, with the invasion of Muravyov detachments, who organized the massacres in Kyiv, the era of the Red Terror in Ukraine began. The corresponding decree proclaimed the struggle against counter-revolution, speculation and other crimes by isolating “class enemies” in concentration camps and by physically destroying “all persons involved in Whiteguard organizations, conspiracies and riots”. The mass nature of torture by the Bolshevik regime led to hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties.
Students of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University read poems dedicated to the tragic fate of the defenders of the Ukrainian state. The poet Nadiia Neshcheret presented our University with a collection of her own poetic works, which will be transferred to the scientific library.
At the end of the event, those present laid flowers to the memorial sign to the dead fighters.
